The HMS Bounty, a replica used in the Marlon Brando movie "Munity on the Bounty", is stuck at sea as Sandy approaches. Here it sails past the Chicago skyline in July 2003.

By NBC News staff

Seventeen people aboard a replica of the HMS Bounty abandoned ship early Monday while stranded at sea off the North Carolina coast, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a press release.

"The 17 person crew donned cold water survival suits and life jackets before launching in two 25-man lifeboats with canopies,"?the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The ship?issued a distress signal late Sunday after taking on water, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The owner of the 180-foot, three mast ship -- which?was built for the 1962 Marlon Brando movie, "Mutiny on the Bounty"?--?lost communication with the crew and alerted the Coast Guard to the situation.

Story: Sandy strengthens as it bears down on eastern US?

The Coast Guard then received a distress signal from the ship showing its position. It sent out an aircraft to speak with the crew, which reported that the vessel was taking on water and had no propulsion. It's currently located about?90 miles?southeast of Hatteras, N.C.

The ship, which is still floating upright and intact,?is surrounded by 18-foot seas and 40 mph winds as Hurricane Sandy moves through the area.

The Bounty makes frequent trips around the country, offering a glimpse into maritime history, according to the ship's website. It was originally a British transport vessel, and the replica has appeared in several films, including the 2006 movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest," with Johnny Depp. Its last stop before its winter hiatus in Galveston, Texas, was to be in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Nov. 10.

It is unclear why the boat set out to sea with Sandy bearing down. Sandy could be the largest storm ever to hit the United States, according to NOAA's website.

TODAY's Al Roker reports from Point Pleasant, N.J., where water is starting to come over the dunes as Hurricane Sandy strengthens. Due to the full moon, high tides are expected to add to the storm surge, which could rise to 11 feet.

The storm strengthened overnight off the mid-Atlantic coast and is expected to bring a "life-threatening storm surge" to affected areas.

BreakingNews.com's coverage of Sandy

Maximum sustained winds of about 85 miles per hour were recorded 385 miles southeast of New York City, which forecasters warned could be hit by a wall of water up to 11 feet high.

The storm was forecast to make landfall Monday night, likely in central or southern New Jersey.

In anticipation of widespread damage and vast power outages, states of emergency were declared in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia.

When Searching For Affordable Car Loans ... - About Finance

Posted by Lucile Jacobs on Rating 9.0 ?Outstanding

When planning to purchase personal vehicle, there are several factors that need consideration and perhaps the most important one is financing. Unless you have enough savings towards this, you will need to take car loan. There are different types of auto finance options available and you will be able to find one that fit your needs whether it is buying brand new car or a second hand one. When submitting application for car loans Alexandria citizens may find the following guidelines to be of great importance.

You first need to determine how much you need to borrow. This will be determined by the cost of the vehicle you intend to drive and even more so your financial capability. You should analyze your financial status and know the amount of credit that will not stress you when it comes to repayment. Your urge of driving a classy auto should not push you into borrowing money that you will find difficult to repay.

Auto finance options are numerous and can be found almost everywhere. Because of this, it is very important to compare rates charged by various lenders. When doing this comparison, you should only compare like terms. You will be surprised by variations that exist in interest rates from different lenders. By comparing, you will be able to choose a lender whose rates are affordable.

Repayment duration too matters a lot. The quicker you repay it, the better. This means you will be repaying in large monthly installments but at a reduced interest rate which makes short term car loans affordable compared to long term ones. You also need to carefully read fine prints to ensure that there are not extra charges that you are unaware of. These may include fines for defaulting, early repayment fees and so forth.

There are situations where a lender will insist that you make down payment before your auto credit can be awarded. This is however not a universal requirement by all lenders. However, you still need to give it serious consideration even in cases where it is not mandatory. Saving down payment mean you are borrowing reduced amount which will in long end reduce your interest rates.

Your credit rating is also very important. Nowadays lenders assess borrowers for approval based on their credit file. You should therefore ensure that you know what is contained in your credit file. Any errors that may be appearing on your report should be corrected or disputed before applying for the credit. Depending on where you live, the difference in interest rates between two borrowers with different credit scores can be very huge. This is why you should always ensure that your score is positive always.

Majority of people are not always aware of the existence of internet lenders. Because of the stiff competition for clients on the internet, these lenders tend to be very affordable. However, you must first verify that you are dealing with reputable financiers. Never should you give out your details online until you have confirmed that it is a genuine site.

When taking car loans Alexandria residents will also need to take insurance covers for the loan. Something may happen to you that will make unable to continue repaying it. It is during such a scenario that insurance cover will be important.

(AP) ? The steep losses finally stopped Wednesday as the stock market turned calm, a day after one of its biggest sell-offs of the year. Major indexes wavered between minor gains and losses in midday trading.

Boeing, one of the 30 large companies in the Dow Jones industrial average, said it expects to deliver more airplanes and raised its estimates for profits this year. Boeing's quarterly earnings also beat analysts' estimates. Its stock rose $1, or 1.4 percent, to $73.82.

The Dow climbed 9 points to 13,111 shortly after noon. The Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped less than one point to 1,412 while the Nasdaq composite index sank seven points to 2,983.

"Today we're assessing the damage," said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott. "Everybody just got clobbered yesterday."

Lower corporate revenue and expectations for the rest of the year drove the Dow down 243 points Tuesday, its third-biggest drop this year. DuPont, 3M, UPS and Xerox all reported lower sales than a year ago.

"It seemed out of the blue, but what we were seeing was stock prices adjusting to corporate profitability," Luschini said.

Facebook was poised for its best day since its stock market debut in May. The company said late Tuesday that 14 percent of its advertising revenue came from mobile devices, allaying some investor concerns.

The social network's stock soared $3.91 to $23.44, a jump of 20 percent. Facebook has swung widely since its IPO at $38, and has traded as low as $17.55.

Another Dow stock, AT&T, said it added the fewest wireless customers since 2003, far behind Verizon Wireless. AT&T's results still managed to beat the estimates of financial analysts. AT&T fell 25 cents to $34.75.

A measure of manufacturing in China, the world's second-largest economy after the United States, improved this month to a three-month high. China's white-hot economic growth has been slowing.

In the U.S., bond prices inched lower, sending yields up. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note edged up to 1.77 percent from 1.76 percent late Tuesday.

Among other stocks in the news:

? Netflix plunged $10.13 a share, 15 percent, to $58.06. Late Tuesday, it slashed its prediction for how many U.S. video-streaming subscribers it would add this year to 4.7 million to 5 million. It had predicted it would add as many as 7 million.

? Dow Chemical rose $1.70 to $30.25. The company announced a wide-ranging restructuring plan late Tuesday that includes cutting 2,400 jobs and closing 20 manufacturing facilities. The company cited slowing economic growth in Europe and elsewhere.

? Tempur-Pedic plunged $6.93 to $24.94, a loss of 22 percent. The maker of premium memory foam mattresses reported revenue that was well below the estimates of Wall Street analysts. The company also cut its estimates for full-year profits and revenue.

Major flaw in standard approach to global gene expression analysis identified

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Whitehead Institute researchers report that common assumptions employed in the generation and interpretation of data from global gene expression analyses can lead to seriously flawed conclusions about gene activity and cell behavior in a wide range of current biological research.

"Expression analysis is one of the most commonly used methods in modern biology," says Whitehead Member Richard Young. "So we are concerned that flawed assumptions may affect the interpretation of many biological studies."

Much of today's interpretation of gene expression data relies on the assumption that all cells being analyzed have similar total amounts of messenger RNA (mRNA), the roughly 10% of a cell's RNA that acts as a blueprint for protein synthesis. However, some cells, including aggressive cancer cells, produce several times more mRNA than other cells. Traditional global gene expression analyses have typically ignored such differences.

"We've highlighted this common assumption in gene expression analysis that potentially affects many researchers," says Tony Lee, a scientist in Young's lab and a corresponding author of the article published in this week's issue of Cell. "We provided a concrete example of the problem and a solution that can be implemented by investigators."

Members of the Young lab recently uncovered the flaw while investigating genes expressed in cancer cells expressing high levels of c-Myc, a gene regulator known to be highly expressed in aggressive cancer cells. When comparing cells with high and low c-Myc levels, they were surprised to find very different results using different approaches to gene expression analysis. Further investigation revealed that there were striking differences in the total amounts of RNA from the high and low c-Myc -containing cells, yet these differences were masked by commonly used experimental and analytical methods.

"The different results we saw from different methods of gene expression analysis were shocking, and led us to reinvestigate the whole process on several platforms," says Jakob Lov?n, postdoctoral reseacher in Young's lab and co-author of the Cell paper. "We then realized that the common assumption that cells contain similar levels of mRNA is badly flawed and can lead to serious misinterpretations, particularly with cancer cells that can have very different amounts of RNA."

In addition to delineating this problem, the Whitehead scientists also describe a remedy. By using synthetically produced mRNAs, called RNA spike-ins, as standardized controls, researchers can compare experimental data and eliminate assumptions about total cell RNA amounts. The remedy applies to all three gene expression analysis platforms they studied.

Although the researchers believe the use of RNA spike-ins should become the new standard for global gene expression analyses, questions are likely to persist about the interpretations of much prior research.

"There are over 750,000 expression datasets in public databases, and because they generally lack information about the cell numbers used in the analysis, it is unclear whether they can be re-examined in order to validate the original interpretation" says David Orlando, a scientist in the Young lab. "It may be necessary to reinvestigate some important concepts."

This work was supported by National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants HG002668 and CA146445, the American Cancer Society, and the Swedish Research Council.

Surveillance cameras are being put into college and university ...

Bloomington, Ind.- Business students at Indiana University will be filmed during major exams after the Kelley School of Business installed cameras in the classrooms to curb cheating. (This is a just another way to condition our students that it's normal for authorities to be watching them 24/7)

"Like every school, we're concerned about ensuring that students aren't cheating on exams," said Interim Dean Idalene Kesner.

She explained that the school has been testing the cameras since the spring semester and put them into action during midterms this fall.

Kesner told Fox 59 the cameras caught several instances of suspicious activity that would've been missed otherwise.

"I'm not sure we would've caught these instances without the camera," said Kesner.

The cameras were bought as a result of the school's rapidly growing enrollment. It serves nearly 5,000 undergraduate students and Kesner said, the school was short on proctors.

"There simply are not enough people to go around during crunch periods of testing," said Kesner.
During an exam, a trained employee watches the feeds from the cameras in a separate room and then informs the instructor of any activity that resembles academic misconduct.

Even with the surveillance video, faculty members decide what to do with what they see.

Realistic Hemorrhoid Medication Secrets - An Analysis | Healthuse ...

Hemorrhoids are very common, especially during pregnancy or after childbirth. They are caused by increased pressure in the veins of the rectal area. Many people have them, but of course, they do not openly discuss that fact. This article can help you better understand the causes and treatments so that you can learn how to avoid them.

Get more fiber in your diet to protect yourself against hemorrhoids or deal with an existing hemorrhoid problem. When you make sure your diet has plenty of fiber in it, you experience more regular bowel movements that are easier to pass. This reduces the stress on any existing hemorrhoids and makes you less likely to develop new ones.

When you go see your doctor, make sure you take with you a list, detailing your diet, as well as your typical bowel patterns. Your doctor may be able to suggest changes to your diet that will help reduce the severity of your hemorrhoids, such as, incorporating more fiber.

Hemorrhoid treatment products tend to be more temporary in nature. That is not to say that you can?t use these products, but an easy way to maximize their effectiveness is to start making healthier food selections and limiting your intake of foods that are high in sugar, carbohydrates and fats.

If you are overweight, this can definitely lead to the development of hemorrhoids. When you have extra weight on your body, there is more pressure in your abdominal and waist area, as well as a high amount of pressure in the veins that are located in the anus. Try to make sure that you are at a healthy weight for your size.

A great tip for your painful hemorrhoids is to try soaking in the tub with Epsom salts added to the water. This is a natural way to try to heal up the area, thanks to the proven healing properties of Epsom salts. Repeat throughout the day as needed. Look at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemorrhoids for clear ideas.

The first time you spot blood in your stool, you should never assume that this is from a hemorrhoid. Be sure that you visit a doctor to find out what?s behind the blood in your stool. If it?s bright red, then it?s probably not internal bleeding, but you should never attempt to self-diagnose.

As stated before, hemorrhoids are an useful body part, as they maintain stool control for the body. Hemorrhoids can cause bleeding and lots of pain if they ever become inflamed. The tips that were featured in the article above will help you if you are experiencing pain from your hemorrhoids.

Must See HDTV (October 22nd - 28th)

Must See HDTV October 22nd 28th

While baseball's postseason moves on to its final round, football is just hitting its stride and NBA preseason action is just beginning to get interesting. This week Blade Runner gets yet another HD home release, there's one more presidential debate, and on Friday the maker of Pushing Daisies returns for a one-off / backdoor pilot attempt called Mockingbird Lane -- check out a teaser after the break. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

I, Robot (3D)
A 3D Blu-ray release isn't uncommon these days, however I, Robot has a fresh twist: it wasn't in 3D in theaters, ever. Fox has made the interesting decision of converting the flick in post and releasing a 3D version exclusively for the home. Fans of the 2004 Will Smith flick can snag a $24.99 Blu-ray 3D set, but if you pre-ordered at Comic-Con, it comes with a bust of the robot character, Sonny. We'll have to wait and see if this trend takes off (Fox says it has more titles in the pipeline), or if people prefer the standard original releases.
($24.99 on Amazon)

Forza Horizon
The Forza series has brought its brand of sim racing to Xbox consoles for several generations, but this latest version takes all of its underlying technology on a trip to the arcade side of town. You won't be doing so much tweaking under the hood this time, but there's still a healthy selection of cars plus options for night and off road racing to keep you interested. Joystiq was impressed enough by its "massive toy chest of hyper-accurate Hot Wheels" to give it four out of five stars, racing fans can check out a demo on Xbox Live now.
($59.99 on Amazon)

World Series
Baseball fans, it all comes down to this. For the championship in 2012 the Detroit Tigers will face TBD in an epic battle that kicks off Wednesday night. Either St. Louis or San Francisco will be representing the National League in the World Series, but we'll have to wait until tonight's game to know which one. The days for the games are already locked in however, so clear your schedule as needed.

UC Berkeley Completes Construction of Alternative Energy Research Building

Energy Biosciences Building, designed by SmithGroupJJR, creates new home for energy research activities

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., October 18, 2012 ?? Construction of the University of California, Berkeley?s five-story, $133 million biofuels research building, designed by SmithGroupJJR, has reached completion in Berkeley, Calif. The 113,200-square-foot Energy Biosciences Building (EBB) is located at the northwest edge of the UC Berkeley campus, a site formerly occupied by the California Department of Health Services. Completed in conjunction with contractor Rudolph & Sletten, the EBB brings together researchers, academic leaders, and students to foster collaboration and spur innovation.

The Energy Biosciences Institute (EBI) ? a public-private partnership formed to develop solutions to global energy challenges and reduce the impact of fossil fuels on global warming ? is the main occupant of the new building. Part of UC Berkeley?s Department of Bioengineering is also housed in the facility.

Building plan responds to emerging industry trends
To accommodate the needs of users, SmithGroupJJR?s designers worked with constituents to develop a flexible laboratory and office plan that responds to the varied research and work cultures of those using the facility. Stacked along the building?s north face fronting Hearst Avenue, research spaces are dedicated to a specialized field of advanced energy exploration. Each floor is organized on a standardized plan and provides two open, eight-bay wet laboratories with dedicated support space located across a centrally-located equipment corridor.

The facility also houses laboratories for the study of molecular and microbial biology, fermentation, and chemical separation, as well as greenhouses, warm and cold rooms, and additional shared instrumentation space. Opposite the support labs, researchers? offices are organized along a glass curtain wall fa?ade on the building?s southern perimeter and overlook the newly created Berkeley Way plaza. Adjacent to offices, conferencing areas and kitchenettes provide venues for formal and informal breakout and social activities. A lobby, reception area, 80-seat auditorium, and auxiliary conference and gathering spaces are also provided at ground level.

Design, engineering solutions support UC Berkeley?s sustainable goals
Targeted to attain LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, building and site design addressed a broad range of sustainable strategies. A highly-insulated exterior cladding system, comprised of glass fiber reinforced concrete panels, provides enhanced thermal and moisture conditions for interior spaces. On the south and west, an angular glass curtain wall profile?projected away from this rainscreen-tiled base?creates a crystalline fa?ade and introduces daylight deep into the office spaces.

Inside, special attention was given to managing laboratory and fume hood ventilation to reduce energy use. This design is nearly 40 percent more efficient than current industry standards. Other features include automated roll-down window shades regulated by the building?s management system and an innovative daylighting control system that adjusts output levels from artificial light sources as daylight travels deeper into the facility. High-performance insulated glass units were also incorporated at all exterior openings.

To further reduce heat gain, an exterior solar shading system was integrated into the curtain wall facade. At each floor, two rows of translucent sunshades are installed at alternating depths of two and three feet. "The sunshades guard against direct sunlight and help to lower energy while also reducing glare,? said Suzanne Napier, design principal and leader of the Science, Technology, Learning & Courts Studio at SmithGroupJJR?s San Francisco office.

Community benefits from new plaza
Sustainable strategies were not limited to building design. South of the EBB, a new plaza provides a much-needed green space. The move also aligns with the city of Berkeley?s goals for downtown renewal. Among other improvements, it offers neighbors a public, park-like area, as well as a restored pedestrian connection for Walnut Street.

The building?s opening was celebrated with tours during Cal?s Homecoming Weekend on October 5-6. A formal dedication ceremony is scheduled in December 2012.

Lisa Haselton's Reviews and Interviews: Interview with mystery author Edith Maxwell / Tace Baker

Interview with mystery author Edith Maxwell / Tace Baker

Today's interviewee is friend and mystery author Edith Maxwell. She's talking about her first mystery in her first series written as?Tace Baker. It's called?Speaking of Murder.Edith Maxwell is the author of Speaking of Murder (Barking Rain Press, under pseudonym Tace Baker) featuring Quaker linguistics professor Lauren Rousseau. Edith holds a PhD in linguistics and is a member of Amesbury Monthly Meeting of Friends. The book was first runner up in the Linda Howard Award for Excellence contestEdith also writes the Local Foods Mysteries. A Tine to Live, a Tine to Die introduces organic farmer Cam Flaherty and a colorful Locavore Club (Kensington Publishing, June, 2013). A mother and technical writer, Edith is a fourth-generation Californian, but lives north of Boston in an antique house with her beau and three cats.Welcome, Edith. Please tell us about your current release.Speaking of Murder came out from Barking Rain Press just a month ago. Listening to academic blackmail and small-town intrigues, Quaker Linguistics Professor Lauren Rousseau uses her ear for accents and facility with languages to track down not only her star student's killer but also crimes committed by her department chairwoman. What inspired you to write this book?I wanted to start a series about a smart young professor who uses her linguistic knowledge to solve crimes. She's got her own set of problems ? issues with commitment, for example???but starts to overcomes them as she searches for a killer. I thought also making her a Quaker would add depth and an unusual aspect to her character. And then I followed her around and wrote down what happened. What exciting story are you working on next? I'm writing the second book in the Local Foods Mystery series. It opens during a fall Farm-to-Table dinner, and I was lucky enough to attend one at a local farm just last week. Great food in a beautiful setting all in the name of research. When did you first consider yourself a writer? In about third grade. My mother told me I was a good writer and I guess it just stuck. I've written ever since in all kinds of formats - journalism, academic papers, technical documentation ? but fiction is what I love to write.Do you write full-time? If so, what's your work day like?? If not, what do you do other than write and how do you find time to write? Alas, I write technical documentation full time, so fiction gets fit in on weekends, retreats, plane rides, and so on. When I do have a full day available, I get up early and write until about lunchtime, when I usually run out of steam. Staying off the Internet is important on those days. It's hard to find enough time to write the books as well as network and promote, but so far I've managed. I hope to be able to leave the day job sometime in the next few years, though. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk? If you had a camera on me at my desk, you would see me doing all kinds of crazy physical things: figuring out logistics of being grabbed or of holding a weapon while also hanging on to something else; scaring myself so I can describe how the throat thickens and the heart thumps; making weird facial expressions, and more. I have to be careful when I'm out writing in a coffee shop or library!? As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? I really don't remember. Isn't that strange? I know I aspired to be a teenager. I adored a girl who lived down the street, with her full-skirt dresses and cool shoes. I guess I never thought beyond that.Anything additional you want to share with the readers? Having my first book out is a dream come true, and it never would have happened without the help, support, and education I get from my fellow Sisters in Crime, both in person locally and online. What a great group of writer-friends I have gained (including you, Lisa!).

Bigfoot vandalizes Winnebago and other claims

A Pennsylvania man who accused Bigfoot of vandalizing his 1973 Winnebago earlier this month is just one of a long history of people who have blamed the hairy humanoid for attacking personal property and dwellings.

John Reed, a Bigfoot enthusiast, claims that during a camping trip he and his girlfriend saw a tall, dark, hairy figure walk past their camper window at night. According to one news story, Reed said the Bigfoot "threw rocks at his mobile home's outside light to escape discovery."

This explanation doesn't make sense; if the Bigfoot didn't want to be noticed, it presumably wouldn't have walked right past the Winnebago's window with two people inside, nor thrown rocks at the camper. The creature could simply have avoided the campsite, or kept walking into the darkness if it did not want to be detected, instead of standing and throwing rocks at an exterior light.

Perhaps the strangest part of the story is that Reed, who founded a Bigfoot hunting group and claims to have seen it twice before, did not photograph the creature. [ Bigfoot, Nessie & the Kraken: Cryptozoology Quiz ]

Reed is not alone
As odd as this story seems, Reed is not the first to claim to find traces and evidence of what they assume must have been a Bigfoot, though not clearly seeing or photographing it at the time. The logic goes like this: I don't know what else it might have been, so it must have been Bigfoot.

It is well known that wild animals attack vehicles such as car and RVs ? especially if they can smell food inside. And many animals, including bears and raccoons, can be very clever and persistent in trying to get into vehicles and other containers. Trashcans in national parks have specially designed latching mechanisms to thwart feral intruders.?

There have been other cases where unknown creatures attack vehicles, though those attacks have typically occurred at night and/or while the occupants were away. Strangely, Bigfoot are never credibly accused of attacking people; just about every other animal in the world has been known to attack humans at some point, including cats, dogs, deer, moose, bear, boar, elk, cougar, birds, fish, and so on. Not so for Bigfoot ? a fact that raises suspicion among many skeptics.

Bigfoot have been claimed to vandalize not only dwellings but also trees. In October 2011, Bigfoot researcher and biologist John Bindernagel visited western Siberia to examine evidence of the Yeti (the Russian version of Bigfoot). He claimed to have found evidence that the creature broke trees and branches. "Twisted trees like this have also been observed in North America and they could fit with the theory that Bigfoot makes nests," Bindernagelsaid in an interview with the British tabloid "The Sun."

In another mysterious incident that some attribute to Bigfoot or another unknown creature, in 2008 a South Carolina couple claimed that something vandalized their vehicle, leaving mysterious bite marks and ripping out part of the fender on their 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan.

Famous 1924 Bigfoot Attack
The most famous case of a Bigfoot attack allegedly occurred at a place called Ape Canyon, near Mount St. Helens, Washington. In 1924, a group of five miners working at the site were besieged by a group of "ape men." One of the miners, a man named Fred Beck, claimed that they sighted a group of Bigfoot high above them on the edge of the canyon. The miners then spent a terrified night holed up in their cabin, during which the Bigfoot bombarded the cabin with rocks, and, they claimed, even tried to break the door in. The miners couldn't get a good look at the Bigfoot?partly because it was dark and partly because they could only see outside through small cracks in the door and walls.

The incident was cited for years in Bigfoot lore as a classic Bigfoot attack, and the details were exaggerated with each retelling. For example a few dozen fist-size rocks that rained down on the roof and walls became "giant boulders" in some versions of the story. Later research found that the famous Ape Canyon Bigfoot attack was not a hoax ? but nor was it real: it was instead a combination of a prank and misperceptions.

It seems that the "Bigfoot" were local YMCA youth from nearby Spirit Lake, who had a long tradition of throwing stones (including pumice rocks, which can be deceptively light for their size) down into the canyon from above. The kids would not have known the miners were in the canyon, nor even that they were necessarily hitting a cabin in the darkness far below. When the miners looked up they would have only seen silhouettes of figures far above them. It must surely have been a terrifying experience for the miners, and it's easy to see how the Bigfoot story could have been spawned. [ Who Believes in Bigfoot? ]

Could something similar explain the recent incident in Pennsylvania? Reed says he believes that the damage to his Winnebago wasn't caused by a group of pranking kids, though police think that's exactly what it was and are treating the case as ordinary vandalism. If Reed wants to file an insurance claim for the damages to his camper, he might want to go with that story.

Make Certain Your Web Based Business Is Legal | Travel

Something a lot of people falsely believe is that an internet business is something which doesn?t require men and women to need to pay taxes. Actually you?re going to find that this is something that is believed by many people, when you work from home you do not pay taxes. One reason many people are becoming attracted to a business online is simply because they think taxes are excluded. For those of you that are looking to begin an online business you should comprehend that taxes are not the one and only thing you will need to pay, you will also need to take care of any special licenses which are required where you live. For people who go through and do your research and discover everything you are going to have to do, it may possibly give you reservations about starting a web based business.

Everything that?s involved in running an internet business can end up being extremely overwhelming, particularly for individuals who have no experience in running any type of business. As a result of the lack of knowledge many of these individuals have when it comes to running a business they mistakenly believe that paying taxes isn?t something they are going to have to do with an online business. Businesses on the web, even though they?re run at home, are still expected to pay taxes on the income they make. By far the most common reasons that folks end up not paying taxes is because they honestly believe they do not have to pay taxes when they?re running a business at home.

Given that most men and women work at a job where the taxes are withheld automatically, they have no idea what a business does when it comes to taxes. The location of a business doesn?t matter when it comes to taxes, but it is based on the amount of income, together with the kind of products or services sold. It will be vitally important for you to make sure that you are paying your taxes whenever you are earning a profit simply because this is required by law. Even if you are running your (rechtsschutzversicherung vergleich) business totally by yourself, you still are a sole proprietor and need to register your business, and pay your taxes every year. Running a business isn?t going to be something which is very simple for many folks because they have never had any kind of experience with all of the tax stuff that they need to know.

Something else you need to bear in mind is that the Federal taxes which are going to have to be paid are going to end up being filed differently depending on whether you are incorporated or if you?re a sole proprietor. As a sole proprietor your earnings is reported with your personal tax return, and you?re required to pay self employment tax, in addition to medicare taxes. If you file as a corporation the tax structure is going to be different. It will depend on your organization, whether the tax is paid within the corporate level, or is passed down as income.

You should also understand that every state is going to have different tax laws, and because of this we suggest everybody talks to an accountant in your state. Bear in mind running an online business is going to require loads of offline work, so make certain it?s going to be worth it for you.

Polish city of Wroclaw comes to terms with its German past

Communist Poland tried to stamp out Wroclaw's history ? as the once-German city of Breslau ? upon taking control of the city after World War II. But Wroclaw now is embracing its past.

By Isabelle de Pommereau,?Correspondent / October 19, 2012

People walk in front of Renoma shopping center in Wroclaw, Poland, in July 2011. After a long period of trying to obfuscate its history, Wroclaw ? once the German city of Breslau before being transferred to Poland after World War II ? is now coming to terms with its past.

Kacper Pempel/Reuters

If there is one sign of Wroclaw's transformation from a peripheral city in southwest Poland into an assertive Central European cosmopolis, it is the popularity of its new literary hero, Eberhard Mock.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

A German detective, Mr. Mock plies his trade in the 1930s, when Wroclaw was still the German city of Breslau ? well before the Allies made it into a Polish city literally overnight, to compensate for the Soviet Union gobbling some of Poland?s eastern territories after the war.

After its sudden transformation, Breslau, now renamed Wroclaw in Polish, sought to obliterate its German past, and few here would have picked up a book like "Death in Breslau." But today, the city is embracing its German roots, and the thriller is a bestseller.

"Eberhard Mock is the proof that we?ve accepted our German past, that we?ve overcome our German complex," says Wojciech Sokolnicki, head of public affairs for Wroclaw Economic University. "We?ve discovered Germany."

"We feel comfortable in our own skin."

Confronting a painful past

Facing up to German history took decades. It was the 1945 Potsdam agreement that led to one of the world?s most radical transfer of peoples. The population did a topsy-turvy, German to Polish, overnight. Breslau's German inhabitants, those few that had survived war destruction, were expelled from what had been the capital of Germany's Lower Silesian province. New Polish immigrants, mostly pioneers from central Poland and refugees from further east, were catapulted into the city. Unlike those in Warsaw or Krak?w, the new Wroclaw inhabitants were rootless. But they shared a pioneering drive to dig in, make a bang-up new beginning.

From Lviv (formerly Poland?s Lwow and part of Ukraine today) and central Poland, the parents of "Death in Breslau" author Marek Krajewski ended up in the ruins of an "empty" city that they now would call home. The boy watched the Communists "de-Germanize" the city to eradicate war traumas ? and obfuscate the fact the new Wroclawians were living in homes that fleeing Germans had abandoned. They renamed the streets, flattened German cemeteries, let old Baroque monuments deteriorate, propagating the myth of an ancient Polish city they, the Communists, they said, had saved from the Nazis.

"Anything having to do with the German past was taboo," recalls Mr. Krajewski.

When the Iron Curtain collapsed in 1989, it paved the way for city leaders to acknowledge Wroclaw?s various heritages. The city developed an identity and matured into a regional force that has been driving Poland?s growth.
